Fairplay Maritime Cyber Security Survey 2017
in Association with BIMCO & Supported by the Be Cyber Aware At Sea Campaign
The maritime industry has no choice but to better understand the nature of cyber risk. The June-July 2017 cyber attack on Maersk Group, the leading Danish shipping company, has made it abundantly clear that no company big or small is immune and that people and processes must be a key focus for any organisation determined to protect itself in the digital age. As more than 80% of all reported information security and cyber incidents at sea are related to human error, the human element is one of the biggest vulnerabilities of the industry and must be a core part of the solution.
Following on from the 2016 Fairplay and BIMCO cyber survey, which sought to determine the nature and extent of cyber threats in the maritime industry, this year’s survey will explore what organisations are doing - or should be doing - to prepare their people and how they are amending their processes in an environment of escalating cyber threat. The survey will take between 5-10 minutes to complete.
A key aspect of the survey is that we understand that a seafarer’s experience of cyber security is likely to differ from an executive level shipowner or manager, reflecting different responsibilities and requirements, and working environment of their role. Therefore, to reflect the variety of experience within the industry, this survey filters respondents into three categories, each with its own tailored survey. The categories denote the basic hierarchy within an organisation – executive level (shipowners, ship managers), management level (CSO/DPA/IT Manager etc) and crew/shoreside staff.
This survey will run throughout August. The results of the survey will be published in Fairplay and on fairplay.ihs.com in September 2017.
